Gateway Tunnel funding advances through Senate subcommittee

The U.S. Senate Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Appropriations Subcommittee has approved about $2.5 billion to advance the Gateway Tunnel project as part of a fiscal year 2019 discretionary spending appropriations bill. The plans for the project include adding a rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York under the Hudson River and replacing a portion of New Jersey’s frail Portal Bridge at a price most estimates put north of $20 billion. NJSEED believes the Gateway project is vital to New Jersey and encourages the federal government to fund its share of the project.
